Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
