Delhi Awakens to Hazardous Smog Following Celebrations
Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" level.
Alarming Air Quality Levels
Several parts of Delhi recorded an AQI above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the global health authority.
Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x exceeding healthy levels.
Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Developments
Since 2020, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous smog that engulfs the capital as winter sets in.
However in recent months, the recently formed city government petitioned the supreme court to request a modification of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".
Judicial Verdict and Implementation
To the disappointment of environmental and health advocates, the court agreed to the appeal, specifying that green firecrackers could be used during designated hours throughout the festival.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Several monitoring devices throughout the capital registered pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst levels observed during the festival in at least three years.
Cross-Border Implications
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the festival also triggered a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants originating in India following the celebrations.
Persistent Pollution Crisis
The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the situation continuing to worsen.
Near the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the environment has been found to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever documented in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.
Diverse Contamination Factors
The situation in the city is attributed to a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, garbage fires and haze from agricultural fires in nearby states of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, producing dangerous haze that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air descends.
Medical and Economic Consequences
The economic and health consequences on the nearly 33 million people living in the capital region is substantial, according to various studies.
The contaminated air causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can result in cancer.
Air quality crisis is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k premature mortalities per year in the capital.
